Extract structured PDF data with Python.

Read native PDF text, extract scanned pages, and turn the document into fields your team can review. qbash hosts the function and gives colleagues a form to upload a file.

Meet qbash Tasks

Your Python, deployed and ready for your team.

A Task is a cloud-hosted Python function. Write your automation, save to deploy, and give your team a way to run it.

How Tasks work
  • Cloud-hosted

Your function runs on qbash. No server to provision.

  • Built in Python

Write the logic, call integrations, and decide what AI handles.

  • Multi-model

Choose the model for each AI step in your function.

  • Versions & logs

Review code changes, restore versions, and inspect each run.

  • Auto-deploy

Save your Task to make the new version live.

  • Run anywhere

Call it from a form, API, Slack, or AI chat. Schedule it, too.

Extract PDF page text in Python, then return structured review fields.

The plan identifies usable native text and pages needing extraction. Per-page checkpoints store file references so large text is not stored directly in checkpoint items.

Before you run this example
  1. Connect a model and declare document as a required File input. Share the Task only with people allowed to access the supplied documents.
  2. The example accepts at most 50 pages and 100,000 extracted characters. Split larger documents before the final model call and choose a model that supports the file input.
  3. Review extracted values against representative source documents before using them in downstream writes.

if not document:

    "plan-file",

        json.dumps(qbash.documents.extraction_plan(document, strategy="hybrid_router")),

qbash.output({"fields": fields, "status": "review_against_source"})
  • Pages with usable native text bypass page-level model extraction. The final structured-fields call still uses a model.
  • The output schema declares required keys and nullable values. A missing key raises an error rather than causing a later dictionary lookup to fail.
  • The function returns the extracted fields and a review status. It does not send a Slack message or update business records automatically.
  • Saved plan and page references let a resumed execution reuse completed work. Fresh runs have separate checkpoint scopes.

When custom Python is useful

Specialist parsing tools can handle the document conversion step. A Task brings that extraction into a hosted Python workflow with typed inputs and returned results.

Put this automation to work with qbash.

Connect the example to the way your team uses it.

    Give colleagues an upload form

The document File input generates a run form. Share it with authorised teammates or expose it through MCP, the protocol that lets Claude and ChatGPT call your tools. qbash.output returns the same extracted fields to either caller.

Extend to a bounded batch deliberately

For several documents, make each file a separate job with a stable file key, per-file plan storage and per-page checkpoints. Limit both document count and concurrency. The code above is a complete single-document Task, not an implemented folder backfill.

Review schema changes alongside the code

qbash versions the extraction instructions and Python together. Compare changes and inspect run failures when documents stop producing the expected shape. Returning a value with the right type is not proof that it is correct, so retain the source review step.

    Questions

Does JSON Schema prevent hallucinated values?

No. It describes the response shape. Instructions request null for unknown values, but extracted facts still need verification against the document.

    Does this handle scanned PDFs?

The extraction plan marks pages without usable native text for extract_unit. Accuracy depends on the document and extraction model. Test difficult scans and layouts.

Can I install pdfplumber or PyMuPDF inside the Task?

The managed runtime exposes a pinned dependency set rather than arbitrary pip installation. This example uses the built-in document APIs. Use a separate environment if you need a particular parsing package that is not available.

When should I use a parsing library or document API?

Use a library or specialist parsing service when it fits your extraction requirements and execution environment. qbash is useful when extraction is part of a Python operation you also want to deploy and share.

Can this write directly to a database?

Add a separate validated write step after reviewing the extracted fields. The example intentionally returns a review result so callers can inspect it first.

    What happens after a failure?

A resumed execution can reuse the saved extraction plan and completed page text. A failure before a file reference is checkpointed may repeat that extraction. Do not interpret checkpoints as exactly-once side effects.
